About Me

My name is Dra. Avelina Rivero and I am a mixed-methods researcher and community-engaged scholar. I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota and Extension Specialist at the University of Minnesota Extension. I also hold an affiliate faculty appointment in the Healthy Weight Research Center.

My research explores the influence of family members (mothers, fathers, sisters) on Latina young women’s body image, eating behavior, and mental health outcomes. Additionally, I examine how cultural values may be protective across various contexts and the role cultural values play in shaping family interactions and relationships, specifically focusing on parent-adolescent and sibling dynamics. To explore my research interests, I employ quantitative methods such as hierarchical linear modeling and structural equation modeling, as well as qualitative approaches like thematic analysis.

Ultimately, I am committed to conducting innovative research and developing programs that promote cultural wellness, healthy family relationships, and the wellbeing of youth, families, and communities.
